The Woodland Edge
The woodland edge is a transitional habitat between the dark enclosed aspects of the forest into the open sunlit meadow. Due to this transitional nature, plants and creatures from both settings may occur in response to varying light levels. Here we experiment with the profuse growth of low growing species of primroses supplemented by attractive cultivars of wood anemones. Such species readily self-sow and when encouraged form natural colonies. The attractive bark of native birch provides a soft backdrop for simple colour contrast against the carpet of flowering species.
